Brussels: The EU is making moves to bring the UK back into a trade agreement. Maros Sefcovic, the EU’s trade chief, hinted at this during a recent BBC interview.

He mentioned that the UK could consider joining the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean Convention (PEM). This would allow for tariff-free trade across Europe and parts of North Africa.

Business groups in the UK are on board with this idea. They believe it could simplify supply chains and boost trade.

However, the previous Conservative Government turned down this option during Brexit talks. Sefcovic said the proposal isn’t fully formed yet, leaving the decision up to the UK.

The UK Government is currently talking to businesses about how PEM could help reduce red tape. Sefcovic also brought up the idea of revisiting a veterinary deal for food and agriculture.

This would mean aligning with EU rules, which could be a sticking point for Brexit supporters. He emphasized that a full-scale agreement should be reviewed to ease trade frictions.

As for fisheries, Sefcovic noted that the current deal will expire next year. He stressed the importance of finding a solution for this issue.

He also clarified that the EU’s offer on youth exchanges isn’t about freedom of movement. Instead, it’s a proposal to build bridges between the UK and the EU.

Relations between the UK and EU are reportedly improving, according to Sefcovic. He even mentioned that he keeps in touch with his British counterpart regularly.

However, some critics worry that this push for closer ties could undermine Brexit. Nigel Farage has called it a betrayal of those who voted to leave the EU.
