A local gardener is urging the council to act on bowling green upkeep amid concerns for the future of a beloved community space in Huddersfield
This has left a local club in Greenhead Park, which has been around for 97 years, in limbo. People are concerned that the social support it offers to older folks might disappear.
The council mentioned they’re reviewing their Parks and Greenspaces services. But there’s no word on when this will wrap up. They’re still in talks with clubs about future plans.
Peter Fawcett, the former gardener, feels the greens are being neglected. He’s calling on the council to get back to maintenance and rethink their approach.
He pointed out that if they don’t keep up with maintenance, important gardening knowledge could be lost. He stressed the need for horticultural education to keep a skilled workforce.
Fawcett also noted that the maintenance work missed in the fall can still be done in spring. Plus, gardening is a great hobby that keeps people active and healthy, which is what the council wants.
He urged Kirklees Council to maintain the greens and reconsider their current plans. Councillor Munir Ahmed confirmed that maintenance is still on hold. They’re reaching out to bowling clubs to discuss future maintenance options.
