England: Hospitals are feeling the heat right now. Norovirus cases have jumped by 20% in just a week. It’s causing quite a stir in the healthcare system.

Last week, around 784 patients were admitted with symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea. That’s up from 650 the week before. It’s the highest number of norovirus cases in January since 2020.

Norovirus spreads easily. You can catch it from close contact with someone infected or touching contaminated surfaces. Even food prepared by someone with the virus can be risky.

The best way to avoid it? Wash your hands often with soap and water. Alcohol gels don’t work against norovirus, so stick to good old soap.

Cooking food well and washing fruits and veggies can help too. Disinfecting surfaces and washing laundry in hot water are smart moves to reduce the risk.

Most people can treat norovirus at home. Just make sure to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. It’s important!

On a different note, flu cases have dropped significantly. Last week, there were about 3,833 patients, down from over 5,000. That’s a relief!

However, hospital bed occupancy is still high at 96%. Many beds are occupied by patients who are ready to go home but can’t yet.

Professor Julian Redhead from the NHS said hospitals are facing a surge in norovirus cases. He noted it’s the highest level since January 2020.

He also mentioned that flu and other winter viruses are still around, making things tough for hospitals. Staff are working hard to help everyone as quickly as they can.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged the pressure on hospitals. He said patients are still facing long waits for care this winter.

He added that while flu rates are dropping, it’s still important to get vaccinated if you can. Contact your local pharmacy or GP to stay protected this winter.
