A dog expert shares simple tips to help you determine if your furry friend is overweight
London: A dog expert recently shared some handy tips to check if your dog is overweight. It turns out that nearly half of all dogs might be carrying extra pounds.
Emily Boardman, a pet nutritionist, created a guide to help owners spot if their dog is underweight, at an ideal weight, overweight, or even obese. She believes that making a few changes can really help your dog live longer.
According to a 2023 survey, vets estimate that about 46% of dogs are overweight or obese. Emily pointed out that obesity can lead to serious health issues like joint problems, diabetes, and heart disease.
She emphasized that keeping your dog at a healthy weight is about more than just their diet. It’s about their overall happiness and health. Simple changes in their feeding routine can make a big difference.
So, what does a healthy dog look like? Ideally, they should have a slight tummy tuck, easily felt ribs, and a visible waist. If you can see their ribs, they might be underweight.
On the flip side, if your dog has visible fat on their neck and limbs, and their ribs and waist are hidden, they’re likely obese. Emily warned that extra weight can really strain their joints and worsen conditions like arthritis.
Obesity can also increase the risk of diabetes, which can seriously impact a dog’s quality of life. Managing this condition can be a lifelong commitment.
To help prevent obesity, Emily suggests measuring food portions and gradually reducing their food by 5 grams every few days. This way, your dog won’t even notice the change.
Instead of high-calorie treats, consider giving them kibbles or veggies like carrots and green beans. You can also use a feeding ball to encourage them to move more during mealtime.
Lastly, she mentioned that some dogs might always seem hungry due to their natural instincts. But if they’re maintaining their weight, they’re probably getting enough food.
