London: So, there’s some buzz about Labour’s latest move. They’re saying they might stick to EU rules even after Brexit. It’s got people talking, and not all of it is good.

Apparently, if the EU rolls out new packaging laws, the UK might just follow suit. Hilary Benn, the Northern Ireland Secretary, wrote to the Assembly speaker about it. He wants to avoid any new barriers for supplies coming into Northern Ireland.

Benn mentioned that the government would consult on keeping things consistent across the UK. This is all to protect the internal market, which sounds reasonable, right?

But here’s the kicker: back in December, the DUP wanted to pull the “Stormont brake.” This brake lets the Northern Ireland Assembly push back against new EU laws. All unionist parties were on board with that idea.

However, the UK Government gets to decide if the new laws really impact daily life in Northern Ireland. Benn told them it didn’t this time around.

Former Brexit negotiator Lord Frost wasn’t happy. He said Benn spilled the beans about Labour’s plans. He feels like the EU is pulling the UK back in, and Labour is okay with it.

Frost pointed out that the government’s Product Standards Bill could mean aligning UK rules with the EU’s. He thinks Northern Ireland is being used as an excuse for this alignment.

On the other hand, Gavin Robinson from the DUP disagreed with Benn. He called it a “grave mistake” not to activate the brake. He believes it’ll just make trade harder between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Robinson urged the government to step up for Northern Ireland instead of giving in to EU demands without a solid plan.
