Drivers in Kirklees are frustrated with new parking fees, claiming hidden charges and discrimination against those less tech-savvy
At the start of the month, parking fees hit 15 previously free car parks. Places like Batley, Birstall, and Cleckheaton are now charging. You can pay using RingGo, either by calling or through an app. Some car parks even have contactless meters.
But here’s the kicker. People using RingGo are finding extra fees on top of the hourly rate. One user said the app wanted to charge them 40p for using it. Another pointed out that it’s not really free if you have to pay to use the app.
RingGo explained that if you park for more than the first two free hours, there’s a 16p “convenience fee.” Plus, if you want to avoid extra charges, you have to opt out of text reminders. And if you just want the free period, you still need to register your vehicle.
Online, folks are worried this is discrimination against those without smartphones or who struggle with tech. Councillor Martyn Bolt expressed his concerns about the lack of clear communication from the council regarding these changes.
He mentioned that the leader said you can pay by card, but in Mirfield, it’s unclear how to use the system without RingGo. Councillor Munir Ahmed, on the other hand, pointed out that 42 out of 57 council-owned car parks are still free. Only eight require a mobile phone to pay.
He reassured everyone that there are alternative parking options for those without smartphones. They’re keeping an eye on how these new charges are affecting people and are open to feedback.
A RingGo spokesperson clarified that the new zones added a 16p convenience fee, but the two-hour free parking option is still available. If you choose that, you won’t pay the fee. They say this fee helps cover the service’s costs and allows for new features.
So, if you’re parking in Kirklees, be aware of these changes and keep an eye on those fees!
