Kirklees residents are outraged over plans to reuse burial spaces, fearing for the future of war graves and the dignity of those who served.
The Law Commission has suggested reopening graves to tackle the shortage of burial space. They think it could save money and free up land for other uses. But folks in Kirklees aren’t having it. A petition against these plans has already gathered over 4,000 signatures.
Christine Leeman, a trustee of the New Friends of Dewsbury Cemetery, is leading the charge. She’s shocked by the idea, especially when it comes to Commonwealth war graves. She said, “These men and women fought for this country, gave their lives for this country, and now they’re talking about digging them up.”
The Law Commission has clarified that they don’t want to reuse war graves. They actually want to increase protection for them. They mentioned that in some places, like London, grave reuse is allowed, but the Commonwealth War Graves Commission must be notified first.
At a recent council meeting, Cllr Josh Sheard expressed his strong disapproval. He called the potential reuse of war graves a “stain on our nation.” He urged the council to object to the Law Commission’s proposals and support the petition.
However, Cllr Carole Pattison, the council leader, said they won’t be reusing any graves. She believes responding to the consultation is a better way to influence the government than signing the petition.
Before any changes happen, the Law Commission will prepare a report and make recommendations to the government.
