London: The Conservatives are really upset about Labour’s new Worship Tax. They say it will hit historic buildings hard, which are so important to our communities.

Recently, the government announced cuts that will affect funds for repairing ancient churches. Labour plans to cut tax relief for these repairs in half. This means nearly 1,000 buildings could close soon.

Culture minister Chris Bryant mentioned that there are “competing priorities” and a tough financial situation. The budget for repairs is now £23 million, down from £42 million.

Each place of worship can only claim up to £25,000 a year. This includes churches, synagogues, and mosques. But this scheme will only last for another year, starting in March.

Shadow culture secretary Stuart Andrew is worried about the impact on historic buildings. He pointed out that last year, the Listed Places of Worship Scheme helped many churches with repair costs.

He criticized Labour for delaying their plans to cut funding, which made churches hesitate on important repairs. He believes this Worship Tax will hurt places of worship that are central to communities.

Research from Historic England shows that 969 places of worship are at risk of closing due to neglect. Sir Philip Rutnam, chairman of the National Churches, welcomes the one-year extension but is still concerned about the future.

He said the scheme’s budget cuts and spending cap don’t provide enough support for churches. They need more time to plan repairs. For every £1 spent on a church, £16 of social good is created.

Sir Philip believes the scheme should be permanent to help keep these buildings open. If they close, it will be the poorest and most isolated who suffer the most.
