Pensioners missing out on winter fuel payments can claim up to £4,375 from the DWP, thanks to new financial support options available this winter.
London: If you’re a state pensioner and missed the Winter Fuel Payment, don’t worry. You can still claim up to £4,375 from the DWP this winter. Sounds good, right?
Last year, the Winter Fuel Payment was available to everyone over pension age. But now, due to some changes, many pensioners are left out. It used to be a universal benefit, but now it’s means-tested.
This means only those on Pension Credit or certain benefits can get it. The idea was to help those who need it most. But if you’re just above the threshold, you might miss out.
Eligible households have dropped from about 11 million to just over one million. But don’t fret! There are still other financial supports available to help with heating costs this winter.
The DWP is encouraging pensioners to apply for Pension Credit during Energy Savers Week, which runs until January 26. This benefit is worth around £4,200 a year.
Plus, it opens the door to other payments, like a £150 Warm Home Discount. And if you qualify for Cold Weather Payments, you could get an extra £25. Claiming all three could really add up!
The DWP shared on X (formerly Twitter) that applying for Pension Credit takes about 16 minutes online. It’s worth checking out!
Pension Credit helps those on a low income cover living costs. You need to be of State Pension age and live in England, Scotland, or Wales to qualify.
If you’re single, it tops up your income to £218.15 a week. If you have a partner, it’s up to £332.95. You can even start your application up to four months before you hit State Pension age, which is 66 for everyone.
To apply, just head to GOV.UK or call the Pension Credit claim line at 0800 99 1234. It’s super easy!
