Pensioners are being warned about scams linked to a council’s air fryer giveaway, urging them to stay vigilant and avoid falling for fake messages
The council has already given out over 1,000 air fryers and plans to distribute another 5,000. This initiative comes after the government cut the universal winter fuel payment for pensioners.
With energy bills rising and temperatures dropping, the council wants to help. However, scammers are sending fake texts asking for money to confirm delivery.
These texts claim that recipients need to pay £1 for delivery. The council has made it clear that these messages are not from them. They urge everyone to ignore such texts and not click any links.
Cllr Rob Waltham, the council leader, emphasized the importance of this program. Many pensioners are struggling with their energy bills, especially now. The council aims to support them with energy-efficient appliances and cooking lessons.
They’re also giving away slow cookers and kettles to help residents save on energy costs. The council is committed to assisting older residents, especially after the recent cuts to winter fuel payments.
They plan to offer sessions for over 700 seniors to learn how to use their new air fryers effectively. The council has already delivered over 1,000 appliances but asks for patience as more are on the way.
The government has faced criticism for limiting winter fuel payments to those on pension credit. Shadow work and pensions secretary Helen Whately expressed concern about the impact on pensioners.
She noted that many feel unheard and believe the changes are a direct attack on them. If you’ve been affected by an energy scam or lost your winter fuel payment, reach out for help.
