A new warning urges UK households to rethink body wash purchases to reduce plastic waste and protect the environment
London: Households in the UK are being warned about body wash purchases. The aim is to cut down on plastic waste harming our oceans.
Every day, the UK uses around 35.8 million plastic bottles. Shockingly, about 16 million of these bottles aren’t recycled at all.
According to a recent report, UK homes toss out about 1.7 billion pieces of plastic weekly. That’s roughly 60 pieces per household! It adds up to a staggering 90 billion tonnes of waste each year.
Most of this plastic waste ends up incinerated, exported, or in landfills. Only 17% gets recycled, which is pretty disheartening.
Cleaning products, especially body wash, are major contributors to this issue. Last year, they accounted for nearly 400,000 pieces of plastic waste.
The Big Plastic Count highlights that the UK produces more plastic waste per person than almost any other country. Recycling alone won’t solve the problem.
Even recycled plastic often ends up in the same place as unrecycled plastic. It degrades quickly and can only be processed a couple of times before it’s discarded.
To tackle this issue, households need to change their buying habits. Switching to refillable body washes and shower gels is a great start.
These products are used daily and usually come in plastic bottles, which adds to the waste problem. While recycling is an option, only 45% of it actually gets turned into new products.
Many still end up in landfills or oceans, causing serious environmental harm. So, it’s clear that recycling isn’t enough.
Instead, consider using refillable options. Some companies even offer home delivery for refills, making it super convenient.
By choosing refillable products, you can help reduce single-use plastic. This is crucial for protecting our planet.
Every little change counts, and shopping sustainably can make a big difference. Let’s all do our part to create a cleaner, greener world.
