A couple in Yorkshire has been banned from owning pets after their dog suffered immensely and had to be euthanized due to neglect
Shaun and Collette Wray were taken to court by the RSPCA. They claimed they were treating Eric’s skin issues themselves because they couldn’t afford a vet. But they had just bought a puppy for him.
Eric was six years old and had multiple open wounds and a huge growth on his leg. He couldn’t walk properly, and the vets said he was in so much pain.
The couple faced the music at Barnsley Magistrates Court. The magistrates called it one of the worst cases they’d ever seen. They pleaded guilty to animal welfare charges.
Each got a 16-week prison sentence, suspended for a year, and they can’t own animals anymore. Eric was in such bad shape that he needed urgent care.
An RSPCA inspector found him curled up in a dirty bed, covered in sores. The couple said they thought about putting him to sleep but never talked to a vet.
After a thorough examination, the vet said Eric had been suffering for months. His skin was raw, and he had deep wounds. Sadly, the vet decided euthanasia was the only option.
The couple will have to wait 15 years to contest their ban. They also have to do community service and pay fines. The magistrate was visibly upset by the case.
Inspector Booth, who has years of experience, said she had never seen a dog in such a bad state. It was heartbreaking to see Eric’s suffering.
